National Fellowships and Scholarships

Numerous awards are open to underclassmen and those seeking post-baccalaureate experiences. It is possible, and often desirable, to apply for multiple scholarships during your college years and beyond. Many of the opportunities on this page require the student to be nominated by ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø.

Carefully considered, comprehensive advising is important when deciding which of these opportunities is a good fit for you and your interests, so please contact the Office of National Fellowships and Scholarships to start the conversation and application process early.

Deadlines

Please note that ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø's campus deadlines are earlier — often months earlier — than the foundations' deadlines, so interested applicants should prepare well in advance.

  • National Institutes of Health Summer Internship Program

    Provides a summer research opportunity to perform biomedical research at the NIH among leading scientists in their field.

    Deadline: February
    Candidates must:

    • Be 17 years of age or older on June 15, 2025
    • Be U.S. citizens or permanent residents
    • Be enrolled at least half-time in and accredited college (including community college) or university as an undergraduate, graduate, or professional student at the time of application, OR have been accepted into accredited college or university program for the fall semester

  • National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship

    Provides a 3-year annual stipend of $32,000 along with a $12,000 cost of education allowance for tuition and fees, opportunities for international research and professional development, and the freedom to conduct your own graduate research at any accredited US institution of graduate education you choose.

    Final deadline: Early November (varies by discipline)

    Candidates must:

    • Be a US citizen, US national, or permanent resident
    • Intend to pursue a research-based Master's or PhD program in an NSF-supported field
    • Be enrolled in an eligible program at an accredited US graduate institution by the fall following your NSF application
    • Have completed no more than twelve months of full-time graduate study (or the equivalent) as of the August 1 prior to this deadline
    • Meet all other eligibility requirements as set forth in the current Program Solicitation

  • NOAA Hollings Scholarship

    The Scholarship provides undergraduate applicants with awards that include academic assistance (up to $9,500 per year) for two years of full-time study and a 10-week, full-time paid ($700/week) internship at a NOAA facility during the summer.

    Preliminary Deadline

    • September 15: Check in with Fellowships Director; work on essays begins
    • December 1: Internal ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø deadline; initial application submitted

    Candidates must:

    • Be a US citizen
    • Be a currently enrolled sophomore
    • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
